It is amazing how seeing or hearing something can spark a thought in your mind. As I sit at my desk working on my website, I am listening to “The Hobbit” in the background.
For those of you who do not know, “The Hobbit” is the trilogy of movies that precedes “Lord of the Rings”. The main protagonist, Bilbo Baggins, sits down at his desk to write the origin story of the series.
Bilbo takes his feather quill, dips it into the ink well, and ever so calmly (and neatly!) writes as his thoughts are narrated for the viewer. I noticed how slowly and deliberately Bilbo write each individual letter, knowing that his words will be read by others and should be perfectly legible.
I sometimes think about the loss of personal connections that can result from our dependence on technology. I know when I write an email, my first instinct is to think of the message as a whole. It is rare that I take the time to think about each individual word and how it will be received.
As I write, I am making a conscious effort to express to you, the reader, how much I want for you to remember the person on the other end of your correspondence. Take time to consider the receiver of your messages. Your work and personal relationships will thank you.
