Week 1 of Blended Learning

It has been a while since my last post, and I apologize for that. I have been completely immersed and excited about the successes of my students after the first week of implementing a blended learning environment. The platform that my school is using is BrainHoney – one that you may be familiar with. If not, it is very similar to BlackBoard and other LMS platforms. I had all of my classes begin with a review of basic Algebra unit since we just began the last term of the school year. I gave students a note-taking format to follow as they go through the lessons. And…so far, so good!

The benefits so far:

  • The majority of my students are feeling more comfortable working independently.
  • Students are actively helping each other “muddle” through the material without my prompting or asking.
  • Students are actively asking me questions and asking me for help, more so than before.

The highlight of my week came Thursday when a student said the following:

“I have never passed a math class before. I’m doing so good in this class. I guess this blended learning thing works for me.”

I have to say that hearing that literally made my day and week! I am a believer in blended learning because of the numerous doors it opens for traditional and non-traditional students. And in my alternative school it has so far been successful in my classroom. As I work with other teachers in implementing blended learning in their content areas I am looking forward to hearing about what is and is not working for them. It is a learning process, but one that is to the benefit of all students.
